Though the
default model is not bad in itself, with the addition of the
following special add on kits, the model can be made to be more
exacting from a historic basis. Many of the parts are either
missing or of the wrong design and the following hardware remedies
this.

| DECALS |
| |
|
In addition
to the set of decals that come with the model kit there you can make a wide variety of additional decals to enhance your
model using graphics available from the Titanic Research and Modeling Association.
See the MODELING TECHNIQUES section for information on making your own decals.
The first set of decals were developed by Duane Fowler. Duane's
decals come in a variety of scales and include the following:
crane decals, flags, stern designations, lifeboat numbers, class area signage, telegraphs, bow names, draft marks, builder's plaque, door plates and more.
- Note: In the reissue of the Minicraft 1:350 they have added the propellor warning signs, corrected the flags details, lifeboat markings, gold hull striping and corrected the slant of Titanic's name on the bow.
BRUCE BEVERIDGE'S DECALS
1:350 Scale Decals
Bruce
Beveridge has developed another range of decals for the 1:350 modeler. His decals include:
-
Windows on different decks such as the Lounge, Reading & Writing Room, and Palm Court to replace the reverse moulded windows on the model. These can be used as an alternative to Tom's photoetched windows.
-
Doors
-
Grab ropes for the lifeboats
-
Interior details for the Private Promenades
-
Interior details for the Cafe Parisien
-
Palm Court Cafe windows and door
-
Deck planks
The graphics to make these decals are available from Titanic Research and Modeling Association.
The
deck decal sheets measure approximately 6 X 8 1/2. They are
transparent decals with darkened lines representing the deck
planks. The planks are spaced correctly for the Titanic with
a deck plank length of approx. 12 feet. The 12 feet length
is Bruce's estimation from looking at construction photos.
For general inquires about any of Duane or Bruce's decals please write to Bruce at bruce@titanic-model.com
1:570 Scale Decals
Bruce has fabricated a complete set of decals for the 1:570 Titanic model that include the missing bow anchor well, grate and catwalks. In addition the kit includes door, windows, lifeboat grab ropes, lifeboat gunwales, funnel grating, and correct fore and aft Grand Staircase skylight covers to name a few. From what we have heard from customers, they were -VERY- satisfied with these decals, and went a long way to making the 1:570 look more accurate than the
`out-of-the-box' version.
The remainder of Bruce's 1:570 decals can be viewed at theTitanic Research and Modeling Association.

KRISTAL
KLEAR
Microscale Kristal Klear is fine product generally used for simulating glass in windows but it can also be used for many other projects. Such as:
- glue
- Grand Staircase's railings
to help hold the decorative gold plaques.
- seam filler between the hull plates
and the deck bulkheads, much neater than putty in
right angled seams.
- water on the decks
Kristal
Klear is made by Micro-Scale who also make Micro-Sol and Micro-Set
for decals. They also produce a sheet of stripes in "Delux Gold"
that can e used for the "gold" stripe on the Titanic's hull.

DISPLAY
CASES
Having
spent a large amount of time and money on your model it
makes sense to ensure it stays in excellent condition. The best way to do this is to either build or buy a display case.
Bob Read offers the following advice for a partly constructing a display case.
"I use
display cases for all my models to protect them from dust. I
usually have an acrylic box made by a plastics supply company
here in St.Louis and then I make the base to fit it. I have
had the acrylic boxes made of both 1/8 inch thickness material
and also 1/4 inch.
The
thicker the material the more expensive. I used 1/4 inch for
my Titanic. The 1/4 is much sturdier and will not flex easily.
You have to be very careful with the 1/8 inch material.
Some
people prefer to buy the acrylic sheets (Lexan) and cut them
on a standard table saw. The pieces can then be glued together
to make a box. I have never done this because I believe you
need a jig to hold the parts square when gluing. There is a
special plastic solvent used to glue the acrylic.
I would
estimate the cost of the clear plastic box at $75- $100 (US)
to have it made for you. I don't know the cost of the materials
if you want to make it yourself. The base the model sits on
and on which the box sets can be as fancy or as plain as you
want. For my Titanic I used red oak stained with a dark stain.
Around the edges I used a 1/4 round red oak molding to give
a more finished look and to help retain the clear cover.
I have
had my Titanic covered for almost 10 years and it looks exactly
the same as the day it went in. Not a speck of dust anywhere."
